Activity 2: Present Continuous
The Present Continuous, also known as the Present Progressive, is essential for discussing actions taking place as we speak, or for describing ongoing situations. Let’s dive in!
When to Use:
- Actions happening now: Events occurring at the moment of speaking.
- She is talking on the phone right now.
- Temporary situations: Conditions that are not permanent or are changing.
- They are living in Paris for the summer.
- Developing situations: Actions that are in progress, even if not happening at the exact moment of speaking.
- The weather is getting colder these days.
- Future arrangements: Planned events or meetings.
- We are meeting our friends for lunch tomorrow.
Formation:
- Structure: Subject + am/is/are + base verb + -ing
- He likes coffee. She goes to the gym.
- For example:
- I am studying for my exams.
- They are playing soccer.
Remember:
- For negative sentences, add ‘not’ after ‘am/is/are.’
- For questions, switch ‘am/is/are’ to the beginning of the sentence.
- ‘Now,’ ‘currently,’ ‘at the moment,’ and ‘these days’ are common time expressions used with the present continuous.
