The Spirit of Hari Raya

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is one of the most anticipated celebrations in Malaysia. Every year, families across the country look forward to reuniting with loved ones, donning colorful traditional clothes, and savoring the joy that comes with the end of the fasting month, Ramadan.

During the last ten days of Ramadan, many families start cleaning and decorating their homes. Walls are repainted, furniture is rearranged, and colorful lights are strung up around the house. It is customary to shop for new clothes in preparation for Hari Raya. The traditional attire is often in vibrant colors that symbolise happiness and togetherness. Markets and bazaars are bustling with people as they shop for their new baju kurung, baju Melayu, or kebaya.

On the morning of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, families gather for a special prayer at the mosque. The sound of Takbir Aidilfitri reverberates through the air, creating a peaceful and joyous atmosphere. After the prayer, it's time for family members to seek forgiveness from one another. This act of asking for and granting forgiveness is an essential part of the celebration, signifying the spirit of renewal and unity.

One of the highlights of Hari Raya is the food. The dining tables are spread with traditional dishes such as ketupat, rendang, lontong, and an abundance of cookies like kuih raya. Each family has its unique recipe, passed down from one generation to another. Friends, neighbors, and relatives drop by throughout the day for open house celebrations, where everyone is welcomed regardless of race or religion.

Another beloved tradition is giving and receiving duit raya. The young, especially children, receive small packets of money after expressing polite greetings to their elders. The green packets, often adorned with festive motifs, are not just about the money but also about sharing blessings and spreading joy among the family.

In many kampungs, children eagerly light up fireworks and sparklers as the evening falls. The sparkling lights and loud bursts of fireworks fill the night sky, creating a magical moment. Laughter and excited cheers echo through the neighborhood as families and children celebrate together.

The celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri not only fosters family bonds but also strengthens the relationships between different communities in Malaysia. Visiting non-Muslim friends and inviting them to the open houses showcases the unity and respect that Malaysians have for each other's culture and traditions.

As the celebration continues for several days, Malaysians across the country take pride in cherishing the values of forgiveness, gratitude, and generosity.
